For the third consecutive year and under the patronage of His Royal Highness Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, a graduating ceremony was held at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland- Medical University of Bahrain (RCSI Bahrain) campus on the 11th June 2012. His Excellency Shaik Ali bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, Deputy Prime Minister of Bahrain, was present to represent the patronage. A total of 208 graduates from postgraduate and undergraduate courses were conferred in the presence of HRH, members of the government, parliamentarians, regional and overseas diplomats, family and friends.
The class of 2012 consisted of: 64 graduates of the School of Medicine, 77 graduates from the School of Nursing, 33 Masters graduates (from both nursing and medicine) and 34 graduates from the Institute of Leadership. Within this group included the 28 MSc nursing students who are the first to receive these qualifications within the GCC. They will all join a long list of RCSI graduates dating back 225 years.
Speeches were given by both undergraduate schools valedictorians; Talal Hilal and Maysa Al Rumaihi gave inspiring addresses reflective of their time at RCSI Bahrain, and included many accomplishments and milestones as the Class of 2012. They thanked their parents and the sponsors: Tamkeen, BDF, Ministry of Education and other private entities, without whom, their education would not have been possible. They paid tribute to the staff of RCSI Bahrain, both academic and administration, who had nurtured them during their years of study thereby training 208 healthcare professionals with world recognised qualifications and expertise.
Speaking at the ceremony, the President of RCSI Bahrain, Professor Collins, reminded the newly conferred healthcare professionals, You are now entering the workforce at a time of considerable turbulence amid economic and political upheaval all over the world. You will not only be the health professionals of the future in the countries in which you will live and work, you will be the best educated, best paid and most influential professional groups in any country in which you work. This places a heavy responsibility on you. You will need constantly to develop and refine your knowledge and expertise so that you can keep pace with the rapidly evolving knowledge base in the Healthcare sector and to ensure that your knowledge and skills are progressed and advanced on an ongoing basis. You will also need to understand and be conscious of the value system out of which you work. Healthcare is by definition a caring profession. As nurses and doctors you are not engineers who work on the machine of the human body - you must rather work out of the moral purpose of doing good. It is impossible to conceptualize a good Nurse or a good Doctor as one who is emotionally disengaged from the moral project of enhancing human health and human welfare and of challenging any factors in the wider environment which in any way damages or depletes human health and welfare. As idealistic value-driven and critically thinking professionals you will bring energy, clarity, expertise and social purpose to the professions which you are today graduating into.

The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland- Medical University of Bahrain (RCSI Bahrain) played host to the members of the Rotary Club of Manama on Sunday the 9th of September, as part of the Universities Strategic Plan in terms of Community Engagement. Their invitation to the campus was extended by the President of RCSI Bahrain, Professor Thomas Collins, who presented a short talk on the community involvement projects, and then more specifically the operation overview of the Mobile Diabetes Unit. This unit was donated to the Bahrain Diabetes Society by the Rotary Club of Manama, and will be supported by RCSI Bahrain as part of their Community Engagement objectives. The visit also included a campus tour, followed by lunch in St Stephens Green.
The concept of Community Engagement refers to a strategic intervention on the part of the University institution to enhancing the wellbeing of the wider community. The University has adopted objectives with regard to this strand by the development of a project called the Open Series Lectures, in which the University is committed towards establishing a collaborative partnership with the local and wider community. Monthly meetings hosted within the University or at other venues would address specific topics in reference to healthcare issues or current research projects undertaken within the University. These would be delivered by staff at RCSI Bahrain, and showcase the varying degree and skill in which RCSI Bahrain is committed to healthcare education and leadership.
Speaking at the inaugural lecture, President Collins conveyed the message that, RCSI Bahrain is actively engaged in designing, implementing and maintaining community engagement and service projects. As a centre of learning and excellence, the University strives towards providing service to the community, altruistically. RCSI Bahrain is a young healthcare education provider in Bahrain. It conveys its knowledge, expertise and history of 225 years from the mother college in Dublin. RCSI Bahrain has positioned itself as a leader in healthcare education that delivers quality education using modern teaching technology and techniques.
The President of The Rotary Club of Manama, Mr Robert Timmers, commented: "We in the Rotary Club of Manama recognise the very serious impact that diabetes has on Bahraini society, both in human and financial terms. This disease is a tragedy for the individual and for the family as a whole. Preventing diabetes by educating children and families is, in our view, a priority and we have donated BD 35,000 to this campaign of awareness and specifically to funding the Mobile Diabetes Unit. This partnership with the RSCI Bahrain will provide a significant boost to this important work."
The Rotary Club of Manama, with a current membership of 66 men and women from all segments of Bahraini Society, was founded in 1965 with the purpose of raising funds and giving support to community projects in the kingdom and abroad. The Child Protection Centre, the Deaf & Mute Society and Al Rahma Centre are other recent beneficiaries.
With the motto "Service Above Self", the Manama Rotary Club is a part of a world-wide service club organisation with over 1.2 million members.

Prof. Thomas

As part of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland- Medical University of Bahrain (RCSI Bahrain) Community Engagement strategy, the President of the University, Professor Thomas Collins addressed more than 100 special guests and members at the Bahrain British Business Forum (BBBF) monthly luncheon held on the 17th of September at the Crown Plaza Hotel, Bahrain.

In a presentation entitled: Pre-requisites for a Quality Education System in Bahrain with specific reference to the higher education system Professor Collins drew from his experience as an educationalist in Ireland where he was formerly Professor of Education in National University of Ireland Maynooth.

President Collins observed that in the 1960s, the then Irish Prime Minister Jack Lynch used to say that it is not the case that Ireland is too poor to invest in education, but rather that we are too poor not to do so. He added that Bahrain, already a country on solid economic standing, should view Education as the single most important investment it can make towards securing the long term economic and social viability of the country.
BBBF Chairman Khalid Al Zayani expressed the Forums appreciation of RCSI Bahrain, one of the leading academic institutions of its kind in the region, in supporting the advancement of educational standards in the kingdom in line with Vision 2030. The BBBF is committed to supporting RCSI Bahrains ongoing efforts to provide first-rate healthcare education and training to students from Bahrain and beyond, said Al Zayani.

The BBBF is a growing network of businessmen and women in Bahrain, which now has over 460 members. The Forum aims to promote trade and investment between Bahrain and Britain by offering opportunities for networking and knowledge sharing between the two business communities.

CPR

Over 300 members of the public were trained in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) at a recent event in Bahrain City Centre Mall. The Save a Life for Free Campaign was a joint effort between RCSI Bahrain, Bahrain Defense Force Hospital, the Cardiac Centre and Bahrain City Centre Mall. On the 17th of November, three hundred people were trained in one day at the event. Almost 300 surveys were also completed by the participants, which will enable the first research data of its kind in the region on peoples attitudes towards CPR, use of social media in the healthcare arena and CPR training feedback. Data was also collected on cholesterol and blood pressure and this will give the organisers of the event the base line statistics of what is happening in Bahrain.

The Save a Life for Free Campaign also saw over 3000 information leaflets, in both Arabic and English, which gave clear instructions and directions as to what action to take if someone experiences chest pains, handed out on the day. The overall aim of increasing the number of trained lay people in CPR, which is an American Heart Association (AHA, 2011) recommendation, was definitely achieved on the day.

Speaking after the event, Professor Mary Lynch (Tareif), from Bahrain Defence Force Hospital said that, All involved gave their time, skills and recources freely and with generosity of spirit with the sole goal of improving CPR awareness and skills in the community. We managed to train almost 300 individuals on the day and hopefully, since each person received an AHA Family and Friends CPR Anytime kit, will share their knowledge with others. If a single life is saved through this event, it will all have been worthwhile.

CPR

Ms. Orla Merrigan, Lecturer in Nursing, RCSI Medical University of Bahrain, on behalf of the College said that, The overall aim was to increase the knowledge and awareness of members of the public in CPR. We would hope that as a result of this training session we have now equipped a large number of the population in Bahrain, with the knowledge and skills to perform CPR in an out of hospital Cardiac arrest situation. As an educational institute we look forward to disseminating the research findings from the anonymous questionnaires completed by the public in the near future which will add new knowledge to this area of CPR and Social Media in the Gulf Region.
