The undergraduate nursing programme at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland- Medical University of Bahrain (RCSI Bahrain) consists of four years and those graduating receive a Bachelor of Science, Nursing. The teaching programme includes both lectures and clinical practise in the local teaching hospitals and the university campus.
Learning in a clinical placement environment takes a lot of time and can be demanding, and each clinical tutor must be aware of the RCSI Bahrain programme, expectations and standards, procedures, documentation and the curriculum itself. Therefore, a two day workshop is being provided to orientate the tutors. These practicing licensed nurses come from many different working backgrounds and this gives the RCSI Bahrain nursing undergraduates a wide clinical exposure.

Clinical

Speaking on behalf of the School of Nursing, Ms Erfaneh Naghieh Clinical Programming Officer said, This workshop is a collaborative project that aims to graduate competent nurses who function between the School of Nursing & Midwifery at RCSI Bahrain, the BDF and MOH. Clinical tutors will adopt a formal role in training nursing students to acquire clinical competencies and to enhance role modelling and tutorial supervision of nursing students.
The two day workshop saw 66 registered nurses from Ministry of Health, BDF and Cardiac Centre, Salmanyia Medical Complex, Judhafs Maternity Hospital, Psychiatric Hospital and local health centres participated. The group were introduced to different RCSI Bahrain academic facilitators from the school of nursing, highlighting different learning objectives including the role of the new clinical tutors.

Over 5000 people attended the day event in which the group of RCSI Bahrain students disturbed t-shirts, brochures and had banners displaying information.

Dr Hana Khadom who runs the Bridging Course said During the module on Health Promotion, students work in groups and select a project on health issues. The main aim of this module is to provide nurses with skills to plan, implement and evaluate health promotion strategies for groups in their area of practice taking into account the factors that determine and influence health. We are very proud that the students work was highlighted for the benefit of the local community

For the second year running, the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland- Medical University of Bahrain (RCSI Bahrain) collaborated with the local charity, Think Pink Bahrain, to raise awareness about breast self examination. Showcasing the charities 2011 campaign on its eight metre high windows, the pink light bulb will be insitu from the 1st of October until the 31st of October, in line with worldwide breast cancer awareness month. The campus, located just off the Sh Isa bin Salman Bridge where there are three lanes both ways, providing high visibility of this awareness campaign.

Pink Day

The idea comes from a very simple device, the bulb, which is known globally to emit the most basic of human needs - the light. We need it for survival and most of all, to be aware of our surroundings, as no one likes to live in the dark. Light is the one thing, which can also be passed on in the form knowledge and hope. Regardless of all odds, the power to fight this disease lies in our very hands - the touch. The idea simply illustrates the most basic of human nature. In doing so, we symbolize hope, unity, awareness, and most importantly, life. The pink bulb is on a journey to share the light of early detection, spreading the hope and most importantly, a positive message to fight this disease. We encourage everyone to pass on this light for a breast cancer free Bahrain. A touch is all it takes.
To mark the day, staffs were encouraged to wear pink, with a student day planned for the end of the month. A total of 107 staff are employed at the campus, encompassing 15 different nationalities. Willing every year to don pink to raise awareness, Ms Sara Al Mahdi Student Services said, I hope we can encourage Bahraini woman to break the taboo of doing their monthly breast self examinations and to raise awareness in the local community. Mr. Ismail Al Awadhi from Finance mentioned, I will support any organsiation which is helping people in combating diseases. Think Pink Bahrain is doing a lot for Bahrain and I am their staunch supporter.

Breast Cancer is responsible for taking more womens lives than any other cancer form. The main problem in tackling this disease is negligence and lack of knowledge. Speaking on behalf of the university, President of RCSI Bahrain, Professor Tom Collins said, RCSI Bahrain is delighted to support the Think Pink Bahrain charity. Its role in supporting public education and new treatment initiatives in breast cancer are profoundly significant, and are entirely aligned with the broad social and public purpose of RCSI .
Not to be outdone by the staff the students too organised their own pink day event, which is now very much an annual event. Decorating Stephens Green canteen with pink, they sold official merchandise, cakes, candles, pink wrist bands and raised BD 1100. Competing against each other for a good cause, the School of Medicine; Senior Cycle Two raised the most as a class. All funds will be directed towards the purchase of the first public digital MRI machine.

What makes this a special event is that the group is a mixture of both men and woman, from a variety of backgrounds and cultures. Many of the riders have been touched in some way by breast cancer and this ride is important on many different levels. "There is a big misconception about people that ride motor bikes. I have to say that every year is a pleasure to collaborate with H.O.Gs Bahrain. I applaud each one of them for taking the time, and showing so much community spirit Think Pink Bahrain Founder, Ms Sprakel

Through supporting Think Pink Bahrain Breast Cancer Awareness I think we can soften some of the worst blows that life delivers, paint smiles and help build better futures. No matter how painful the situation might be, it only takes ones awareness and contributions to fight this disease. The good thing is with early detection of breast cancer lives can be saved, so hand in hand lets make a difference.

RCSI BAHRAIN TRANSLATING WASTE INTO CHARITY

Despite the growing public awareness of global warming and the need to conserve the earths precious resources people worldwide continue to live as if there is no limit to our space and to our resources. In 2008, Bahrain produced 1.7 million tonnes of rubbish. Thats nearly 4,700 tonnes each day and approximately two tonnes per person, annually. Recycling, though a massive industry in many countries, is almost non-existent in the country.
The university was directed towards Bahrain Environment Services Association by Ms Danah Smith, an RCSI Bahrain academic. This provided an opportunity to develop and establish a system in the college through which any monies received would be donated to charity. . The money raised from the waste collected is directed towards a Bahrain based charity: The Mother & Child Welfare Society.

CHARITY

Already having a limited photocopy and printing policy in place, a decision was made to supply receptacles at each copier and special bins in Stephens Green, to collect alumni cans and plastic bottles. All newspapers and magazines are regularly collected from the offices by the Estates Department and any shredding is bagged into the companys hessian bags that they provide. Speaking on behalf of the RCSI Bahrain Club: Friends of the Environment, Medical student Ali Abdulnabi Mohamed commented, The recycling project at RCSI Bahrain was one of the most significant initiatives stared this year in the college. It does not only raise the awareness of resource recycling importance, but it also allows and encourages students and staff to participate actively in conserving and protecting the environment. Through this successful recycling initiative, medical and nursing students have the opportunity to fulfil their responsibility towards their planet and feel they are part of the efforts to preserve it. It also reflects our universities commitment to be positively involved in adding value to society, environment and ecosystem.
The first collection of recyclable materials was collected this month, totally 40 bags of shredded paper, cans and plastic bottles, 10 large stacks of bound magazines and newspapers. This will be followed by an RCSI Bahrain Green Campaign which will involve further education of both staff and students.

As a part of the preparations for a major international healthcare conference Evidence-based Breast Cancer Management: Options for the Gulf Region a pre-conference meeting was held at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland- Medical university of Bahrain (RCSI Bahrain) on Thursday December 8th. The conference, which is being sponsored by HRH the Prime Ministers Court, is organised jointly by the Bahrain Branch of The Cochrane Collaboration and the International Network for Cancer Treatment & Research (INCTR) will be held at the Ritz Carlton on April 2nd and 3rd 2012.

This conference will bring together global experts in breast cancer control with high level policymakers, clinicians, researchers and advocacy groups from the Gulf States with the objective of informing improvements in breast cancer control. It will provide a valuable opportunity for regional and local decision makers to quiz the experts about the relevance of current research to breast cancer management within a Gulf States context and to discuss amongst themselves the potential for shared projects in breast cancer control and research. Because the control of major non-communicable diseases (NCDs), such as breast cancer, require a multi-sectoral response it is appropriate that representation at the conference should be inclusive and at the highest possible level.
The preconference meeting held at RCSI Bahrain was one of several planned, which will ensure the engagement of not only healthcare professionals throughout the region but also the academic institutions which train those professionals.
The attendees at the meeting were welcomed by Professor Tom Collins, President of RCSI Bahrain and the Dean, Professor Sameer Otoom. Prof Collins pointed to the importance of this conference not only for medical professionals but also for patients. He thanked the organisers for considering a speaker from RCSI Dublin and indicated that the university is devoted to provide any support needed to help in the success of this event.

The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland - Medical University of Bahrain (RCSI Bahrain) held its second research day on Tuesday the 13th of December. This forum was used to present the most recent research studies undertaken in RCSI Bahrain and to highlight and emphasise the importance and significance of research within the College. Open to undergraduate, post graduate and academic staff, the event saw 31 submissions in total: 14 oral presentations and 17 poster presentations. An array of research topics included pain management and medication compliance, to pediatric electroencephalography. The audience included both administration and academic staff from RCSI Bahrain and guests from other universities, institutions and local hospitals. Speaking at the event, Professor Collins, RCSI Bahrain President said, The essence of a University is that its teaching is either research led or research informed. It is this more than anything else that distinguishes a University from all other teaching environments. While this pre-supposes that University academics are research active or research informed, it also suggests that university students should develop an appreciation of the value of research in their academic and professional development. It also suggests that they should be introduced to and acquire the skills of conducting research in terms of formulating research questions, deciding upon a research design, implementing the research project and reporting the findings. It is through this kind of exposure that students begin to appreciate the nature and complexity of scientific research and to develop the academic skills and imagination which can underpin their professional and personal development throughout their lives.
Two undergraduate awards were presented at the event, and included Saif al Borgan and Zaid Marhoon for winning the RCSI Bahrain Top Oral Research Presentation for the topic Attitudes, beliefs and perceptions towards Water-pipe (Shisha) among Water-pipe smokers in Bahrain and Maryam Fareed Ashoor for winning the RCSI Bahrain Top Poster Presentation for the topic Antibacterial activity of metal 8-hydroxyquinoline complexes against gram negative and positive bacteria. Both winners received the annual award and these will be proudly displayed within the university. Professor David Whitford, Chairman of the RCSI Bahrain Research Committee commented, Research output in Bahrain is in its infancy compared with many places in the world. One of the objectives of RCSI Bahrain is to contribute towards changing this situation. The development of an increased research capacity amongst healthcare workers can only contribute towards this. We look forward to increased research amongst faculty and students at RCSI Bahrain and see collaborations with other universities in Bahrain, the GCC and internationally as a means towards this end.

A final year undergraduate medical student, Ms Hiba Rashid, from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland- Medical University of Bahrain (RCSI Bahrain) has been accepted for an internship as part of the Hamad Medical Corporation Doha, Qatar. She will start this prestigious programme in July, once she graduates.

The Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) is a not for profit health care provider in Doha Qatar. This corporation manages six of the largest hospitals in Doha, which are highly specialised medical facilities now capable of providing state of the art diagnosis and treatment of diseases that previously could only be managed overseas. The HMC believe that the key element of the initiative will be wider community engagement through developing a deeper social conscience and bestowing tangible economic and health benefits on the community. It is this vision and mission of the group that will enable Hiba to be exposed to a diverse environment for her internship.

The highly competitive placement saw Hiba compete against 200 applications for this internship in Doha. The placement required her to pass the American Board Exams, USMLE or IFOM. President Tom Collins congratulated Hiba on her achievements in the presence of Professor Otoom, Dean of RCSI Bahrain and Mr. Fadi Ghosen RCSI Bahrain Regulatory Affairs Administrator. He stated that this was an important milestone for the university and provided further evidence of the international standards being reached in the teaching and learning to which students in RCSI Bahrain were exposed too. He highlighted the Regulatory Affairs Office and particularly Fadi Ghosen for the support the office provides to all our students in furthering internship options throughout the world.
