Two student initiatives raised BD 740 raised for: Alia for Early Intervention. The two separate events organsied by students of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland- Medical University of Bahrain were a five day trek up the Machame Route to the summit of Mt Kilimanjario at Uhurdu Peak, Tanzania and the 2011 celebration for International Nurses Day. Both activities saw funds raised in-house and donated to the local Bahrain charity.
Alia Centre was set up in November 2004 by the Bahrain Society for Children with Behavior and Communication Disorders. Its team includes a diverse group of parents, family members, special education teachers, administrators, medical doctors, therapists, nurses and aides, as well as countless other personnel involved in the education, care, treatment and support of individuals with behavioral and communication difficulties. The mission of this Bahrain charity is to promote lifelong access and opportunity for all individuals with behavioral & communication difficulties. Education, advocacy at all levels, active public awareness and the promotion of research form the cornerstones of the societys efforts to realise its mission.
The donation was accepted by Vice President, Ms Sumaya Hussain and board member Ms Sahar Juma for Alia. Ms Hussain said, The money will be used to purchase either equipment for our new programmes or to sponsor a child at the centre on a monthly basis. Our future plan includes expanding and therefore building a new centre to help support the needs of the charity. Donations like these are very much welcomed and we would like to thank the students of RCSI Bahrain for their honourable community involvement.
